Trapped Water in Plastic Water Bottles Is a Very Real Problem

With today being Earth Day we wanted to highlight a problem that most of you probably never even thought about it. Trapped water in plastic water bottles.

In the US alone, we waste 22 million gallons of water each year in landfills due to trapped water inside plastic water bottles. That is 22 million gallons of water that we will never get back into the Earth's water cycle. That is an alarming stat!

Water is vital for all life, and fresh water is vital for human life. Freshwater makes up an exceedingly small fraction of all water on the planet. While nearly 70% of the world is covered by water, only 2.5% of it is fresh. The rest is saline and ocean-based. Even then, just 1% of our freshwater is easily accessible, with much of it trapped in glaciers and snowfields.

With that said, all the water that exists in the earth’s atmosphere is all that ever was, and all that will ever be. When we trap water in plastic bottles we are taking part of our fixed water supply out of the water cycle.

So please remove your bottle cap from your plastic water bottle before discarding it so the water can go back into the water cycle. Even better! Use a reusable water bottle. It’s easy, clean, and guarantees you are not trapping water from us.

Small droplets of water trapped inside a plastic water bottle never to be re-entered into the Earth’s water cycle.
